After earning a master’s degree in Visual Arts and Art Sciences from University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, she then enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs in Paris. There, she earned a degree in industrial design with honors under the guidance of the renowned designer Roger Tallon. The artist completed her academic training with specialized studies at Georgia Tech University’s Institute of High Technology, Graduate School of Design, in Atlanta, United States.

Since 2005, permanently represented by the Galerie Isabelle Laverny in Paris, Florence Lemiegre regularly exhibits her works both nationally and internationally. Her works have been featured in numerous renowned museums, biennials, and art centers, notably in Canada, Italy, Spain, China, and South Korea. In September 2025, the Museums of France recognized her work by acquiring two of her sculptures, “CHANDOISEAUX I & II”, which are now part of the permanent collections of the The Museum of Norman Traditions and Arts at Martainville Castle in Normandy. Her artistic career has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Taylor Foundation Sculpture Prize (2018) and the Arcité Sculpture Prize (2020).

ARTISTIC APPROACH: COLLECTIONS & UNIVERSES

For more than thirty years, Florence Lemiegre has been developing a substantial body of visual art centered on ceramics, guided by a deeply experimental exploration of clay and glazes. The artist’s work is not to be viewed as a series of isolated pieces, but rather through the lens of major collections, conceived as truly autonomous and unique worlds.

The fundamental question of balance and imbalance in living things connects each of these worlds. This organic inquiry, inseparable from her entire body of work, is intertwined with constant explorations of movement, vibration, and breath. Each piece embodies this quest for equivalence, manifested through a subtle balance between three-dimensional volumes, contrasts in materials, and harmonious color schemes.

Her creations are thus punctuated by a profusion of cheerful and dynamic hues, contrasting the depth of smoky blacks with the brilliance of shimmering glazes. This use of color leaves the imprint of a free pictorial expression, guided by the spontaneity of her gestures and enamel brushstrokes. Always present in the background, this dialogue between form and color fuels his imagination and weaves the common thread running through all his collections.

… “I also hope to find that gentle harmony between skill, foresight, and chance—that element of the unexpected, the random, and the indefinable that makes every discovery of the pieces when the kiln is opened so magical.” …

THE DIVERSITY OF WORLDS

The Mirror Universe of Life: The Culbutos 2011-2026

With their clean lines and simple forms, the “Culbutos” – most often monostatic- oscillate, sway, and hesitate before finding a point of stability. Through them, the artist explores imbalance and balance, instability and stability, strength and fragility. For her, the “Culbutos” are also the graphic representation of the “symbolic object” par excellence—the resilience described by ethologist and neuropsychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik. In popular culture, isn’t the “culbuto” indeed “a person who always gets back up despite the blows they suffer”? The design and names of her sculptures are also a nod to the world of childhood.

  • The Starry Bloom Culbutos 2014-2026

The work symbolizes the inner journey of resilience. At its base lies the realm of chaos and trial: a raw, smoke-stained earth, sculpted in a monochrome palette of deep, dark grays. These muted, earthy tones subtly evoke the cracks that run through existence, where matter retains the memory of the impact. Then, through the alchemy of glazes and the metamorphosis of fire, a luminous transmutation takes place, ushering in a time of healing. The piece bursts into a profusion of shimmering, vibrant colors. On the edge of abstraction, a radiant, secret, and protective star emerges in filigree: a true promise of life.

  • Les Culbutos Chamarrés (2019–2026)

Created during the lockdown, these works explore resilience in the face of trauma. In them, the artist uses drips of enamel to simulate the passage of time, life paths, and paths to healing. The sculptural work reveals a duality that is both raw and refined, capturing shadows and playing with intense chromatic variations.

Her creative intent is also to reveal emotions by refining the sculptural form, capturing shadows, nuances, textures, and pictorial effects. She therefore works in distinctly different ways on the two sides of the *Culbutos Chamarrés* to accentuate the duality of feelings. Both sides reflect a blend of strength and gentleness, and their expression is at once raw and refined, somber and joyful.

These responses undoubtedly resonate with the connections, interactions, shared moments, and laughter we have missed so much, as well as with all the painful events that have tested us during this particularly difficult period.

The Suspended Universe: The Moons of the Seasons 2015-2026

  • The Moons of seasons

Did they emerge from the Earth or fall from the sky? The “Moons” form a rich bed of a thousand flowers that convey to the beholder their strength, their peace, their energy, but also their fragile and fleeting splendor. Faced with these miniature floral landscapes, the wise person makes themselves small in order to wander through them, just as an art lover does before a landscape painting. They offer a spiritual journey to the garden of dreams and emotions and are a source of meditation on the beauty of nature. “Moons” of spring, winter, summer, and fall—they tell the story of the cycle of life.

The Océane Emotion: Noli me tangere and Noli me tangere Pistils 2016-2026

“Les Noli me tangere” is a work dedicated to the protection of nature and, more specifically, to the fragility of our oceans. Florence Lemiegre explores the wounds at the very heart of our planet’s flesh and symbolically denounces the decline in ocean health: the sea and the clay-like earth find parallels and bear the imprints of the traumas and aggressions they have endured. She shapes the clay to create intertwined drapery, interlocking strips, and chiseled earthen lace that evoke coral structures.

The Noli me tangere Pistils are adorned with delicate, moving pistils. At the slightest breath of air, minute oscillations and vibrations ripple through the piece, giving it the illusion of autonomous biological respiration. These vibrations and oscillations evoke sensory exchanges from the depths of the ocean. Like an inner song, the piece whispers an oceanic melody composed of imperceptible breaths. It comes to life.

Eco-Onirism: The Imaginary and Enchanted Forest 2009-2026

“The Imaginary and Enchanted Forest” (La Forêt imaginaire et enchantée) by Florence Lemiegre tells the story of a forest where, just as in novels, paintings, fairy tales, and myths, anything is possible: both enchantment and ruin. The artist also explores our relationship with the world, speaking to each of us collectively about our shared human culture. She offers a poetic and dreamlike reflection on humanity’s connection to the forest, evoking our collective cultural memory and questioning our relationship with nature.

Florence Lemiegre works to protect biodiversity in which humans find their rightful place, to promote the respectful use of natural resources, and to share the riches of our natural heritage. By creating her “tree” sculptures—a miniature imaginary forest, calf-high—she uses the microcosm to speak to the macrocosm, addressing sustainability, biodiversity, as well as sensory perceptions, emotions, and the human experience.

Beneath these imaginary trees—already centuries old, sacred, remarkable, venerable, and vulnerable… majestic yet fragile ecosystems—it is a welcome place to gather, to pause and laugh or cry, to talk, to shout, to love one another, to recharge, to get some fresh air, or simply to breathe. Through this woodland lens, she explores—with profound sensitivity—our collective cultural memory and our sometimes fragile relationship with nature.

In a play of interplay between the real and the imaginary, like a dendrologist, Florence Lemiegre catalogs her creations within a fantastical and dreamlike lexicon. This poetic nomenclature details all their characteristics: size, soil, leaves, origin, variety, growth, flowering throughout the seasons, and even the history of each specimen. Each tree possesses a unique quality that evokes sensations and emotions, inviting the viewer to project onto it both their secret aspirations and their deepest anxieties. This catalog is an integral part of the work; it is its very source, just as much as the original clods of earth from which each new sculpture emerges.

The Emanation of the Earth: Les Pavés Personnages 2006 – 2026

The artist brings forth anthropomorphic silhouettes from the raw earthen cobblestones, figures that extricate themselves from their nurturing matrix. The cobblestones engage in vibrant exchanges of an ineffable intimacy with the subject they anchor, shelter, or support. Despite their apparent inertia, they are an integral and active part of the work. They are its genesis, its chrysalis—like a placental concretion from which the subject cannot, nor would it wish to, break free. A true poetic and dreamlike genesis, each “Pavé Personnage” tells an intimate and universal story: that of the awakening of the senses, of expectations, fears, and secret aspirations that unite us.
